There are so many things you can do with a plain brown paper bag. You can decorate a bag and use it for a gift bag, for a special present. This is a project that kids can help you with. If your children are invited to a lot of birthday parties, this is an inexpensive way to wrap the presents they take. You can even design an activity around the project at youth birthday parties, and the children can use the bags to take their candy and small toys home.
You can glue decorative items like stickers, flowers or leaves onto the sides of your paper bags. Kids can stick or glue any items they want onto the bags. They can also draw whatever kinds of pictures they might like on the bags, and color them. It's a great way to fire up their creativity. After the bags are cleverly decorated, make holes near the top of the bag and run twine through them, to make a handy carrying handle. The holes should be at least an inch from the top of the bag, so they don't rip out. Two to four holes on each side will be enough, and then you can run ribbon or twine through the holes, to make a handle. If you'd prefer a half-bag, decorate only the lower half of the bags, and make the holes halfway up, and tie them with twine or string.
You can also use a brown paper bag to make a beautiful wall covering. It's a fool-proof and simple project. Clean the wall that you'll be covering and paint your sizing onto the wall. When that dries, tear your paper bags into sections. Wad each bag into a tightly-held ball, and unroll it, while smoothing it just a bit. Spread wall paper paste onto the bag, and affix it to the wall. Don't smooth the wrinkles all the way out – you want the surface to be textured. But do make sure that you remove the air bubbles. You can add extra wrinkles by pushing the brown paper around. Secure the next piece of paper to the wall in the same way, and overlap all the papers in directions that are random. After all your bags are dry on the wall, you can trim the edges with an exacto knife. The next step is to stain the paper, using latex paint and water, mixed in equal parts. Apply the paint with a sponge, and this will give your wall the rich look of leather. It's an easy project, and you'll appreciate what it does for your room. Enjoy the new look.
You can also cover a book with brown bags. This is the way many people will remember covering their school books when they were younger. All you need to do is cut the seams of the grocery bag so that you have a flat piece of brown paper, and wrap the ends around the book while it lays open in front of you. Wrap your book like you're wrapping a present. A brown paper bags make a great book cover.
